David’s AIM High Writing Days

As well as making it an enjoyable experience, the main aim of the day will, of course, be to enthuse and extend young writers. The story writing workshops will provide lots of tips and hints to help the children improve their writing and the format will include quick and efficient planning, setting, creating and developing characters, producing effective openings, balance between narrative and dialogue and effective use of description bringing writing to life through effective use of description.

Story Writing Day

Session 1 :

Welcome and introduction to the theme for the day – e.g. Dragon stories – followed by an age appropriate planning session encouraging the children to come up with ideas and create characters. Use of a whiteboard/clip chart to make an example plan together.

Session 2:

Children work on their own planning sheet – again, age appropriate. During this time David circulates, supporting and encouraging each child.

Talk about effective story openings. Using the example plan, the group creates a story opening and then will look at ways it can be improved. Using their own individual plans, the children begin to write their stories. Towards the end of the session, some of the children may share their work to date with the group.

Session 3:

David usually starts this session with a piece of Rhythm poetry all join in with. It’s good fun and is always popular.

The writing then gets under way again with a reminder for children to read their morning work before they continue. Also, encouragement to swap work and read a friend’s work

More children have the opportunity to read their work to the whole group.

Finally, the day finishes with a Question and Answer session, which can take in anything that has arisen from the day or any more general questions about writing.

David is happy to work with children throughout the Primary and Lower Secondary age range and is able to provide writing workshops covering a range of genre in addition to story writing

Curriculum Focus:

In addition to promoting creativity, David day covers many techniques such as modelling and many aspects of grammar and punctuation, organisation of text and effective use of dialogue.

David’s Literacy Workshops

David can offer workshops that a designed to engage reluctant KS2 learners.

The format is flexible and can include story writing, non-fiction (e.g. diary, persuasive writing, historical writing etc) and poetry.

David also offers Comprehension Workshop Days which involve looking at strategies and practising answering questions on a set text.
