Harriet’s AIM High Writing Days

AIM High Writing Day: interactive, fun, educational and action-packed day, focusing on show-not-tell techniques, the nuts and bolts of storytelling and characterisation. Lots of opportunities for students to write themselves. Suitable for students from Year 3 to Year 8/9 however events and workshops for younger children are available on request.

Less Confident Writers’ Day: as above, but more gently paced.

GCSE English Language Day: aimed at super-preparing GCSE students for the creative writing element of their English Language exam.

She focuses on the following:

 Discussing a range of language devices (simile, metaphor, personification, onomatopoeia etc) and explaining a) why a writer might use them in various contexts (AQA Paper 1 Question 2/Paper 2 Question 3) and b) how to apply them oneself (AQA Paper 1, Question 5 (Descriptive Option)). Together we come up with a wide range of rich descriptions (of the weather/people/ clothing etc) which – with a little flexibility - can be applied in the exam.

 Explaining how to write a great story opening ((AQA Paper 1, Question 5 (Narrative Option)) by capturing your reader’s attention, getting the words to “spring off the page” and “showing-not-telling”.
